I have managed to find some NOS tubes Valvo ECC40, Mullard EF80, Mullard EC92 from Central HK for my Grundig 5010 and also another set of nice Valvo EL12 coke bottle shaped tubes from UK.

Grundig 5010

I have played with my new Grundig 5010 for several days and I like the power of the music and the great conditions and its abilities to play all kind of music.  Have recorded a sample of music.

For those who is interested to hear the stereo sound of the Grundig 5010. One of my dream is to have a set of two like these but have to consider the space constraints.

Part of the fun in playing with vintage Tube radios is the ability to tune the radio with different tubes. According to fellow audiophiles Micheal, there are two tubes that will greatly enhance the sound of the Grundig 5010 are namely ECC40 and EF80. I have managed to find a New Old stock Siemens EF80 and hope that it will further enhance the sound...

As per the photos above, I am currently using the straight bottled Siemens EL12 tubes. I am also looking forward to playing with the coke bottled shape EL12 as below:

Through a nice letter via the contact form on this homepage, I got an offer that I could not refuse. I have always flirted with the Grundig 5010 , but so far there has been no opportunity to get a complete 5010 at a relatively moderate price. I organized a collection of the family jewelry in Munich and at the same time I got the history of the radio documented in photos.

The Grundig 5010 was purchased on December 1, 1952, so nothing could stand in the way of the musical pre-Christmas mood.

As an extra, the option was chosen for the optional Grundig ferrite antenna, since VHF was still in its infancy and preferred listening to medium wave. Here is the wedding photo of the buyer Josef Lehndorfer

Since these radios were built for “eternity”, the son and his wife naturally also enjoyed the Grundig radio.

Even if the housing still looks very well preserved, it will still be repainted. It will definitely be a feast for the eyes due to the beautiful veneer! Let's see what our local painter says about it ;-)

Enjoying Grundig 5010 radio

I have finally have the chance to listen to the Grundig 5010 over this weekend. The base is strong and musical and all encompassing. The Telefunken Opus 7 is very elegant and refined and the Grundig is very overwhelming. Given the size of the music, it will be well suited in the living room as well. I can now understand why my fellow Radio audiophile Micheal is keeping the Grundig 5010 as his final radio. He has tested all the flagships models from Saba, Telefunken and Grundig etc and has kept the Grundig 5010.

For me, the Grundig 5010 and the Telefunken Opus 7 are the two best radio. One of my goal is to play the Grundig in stereo and hope I can try it soon.... Will need to hunt for another unit, which is going to be challenging.
